THE STORY

The Portico is defined by the relationship between three distinctly different hardwoods. Naturally marked Ambrosia Maple creates a warm, expressive centre, while Black Walnut and Purpleheart introduce depth, colour and structure around its perimeter. The composition was deliberately restrained, allowing the broad field of Maple to remain the focus while the darker surrounding woods create the architectural frame that gives the board its name.

Designed at 18⅜" × 9¾" × 1", The Portico offers a generous working surface intended for regular kitchen use. Its edge-grain construction balances durability with practicality, creating a substantial board that remains easier to handle than a comparable end-grain piece. The uninterrupted grain running through each section allows the individual character of the three species to remain visible rather than being lost within the pattern.

Ultimately, The Portico is an exercise in structure and restraint. Its design demonstrates that contrast does not need to dominate a piece to define it; sometimes a carefully considered frame is enough to give the material within it greater presence. Functional, expressive and designed to age through use, it brings architectural order to the natural unpredictability of wood.
